Need a Good Book for Vacation

I figure the West Coast Literati could help me out here. I need a good vacation book (and I'm not into Harlequin Romances). Somthing captivating, interesting, perhaps entertaining, thought-provoking without being a downer, something I can lose myself in.

Any recommendations?

Pastwatch: the Redemption of Christopher Columbus
by Orson Scott Card

fantasy future/time travel story with some history and very thought-provoking

a few sad parts but i don't like very sad books

clever and well written

I didnt think I liked the writing in kite runner (it was a little too obvious for my taste)
but the story has stuck with me. And the imagery has remained strong. So another vote for the kites.

Last novel I finished and really liked was the Known World by Edward P Jones.

Here's another one: "Ask the Dusk" by John Fante. Dry, twisted & funny. L.A. esque, struggling writer in the 30s.
