Need a Good Book for Vacation
I figure the West Coast Literati could help me out here. I need a good vacation book (and I'm not into Harlequin Romances). Somthing captivating, interesting, perhaps entertaining, thought-provoking without being a downer, something I can lose myself in.
Any recommendations?

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It's excellent!
classics or modern?
surprise me!
Pastwatch: the Redemption of Christopher Columbus
by Orson Scott Card
fantasy future/time travel story with some history and very thought-provoking
a few sad parts but i don't like very sad books
clever and well written
I didnt think I liked the writing in kite runner (it was a little too obvious for my taste)
but the story has stuck with me. And the imagery has remained strong. So another vote for the kites.
Last novel I finished and really liked was the Known World by Edward P Jones.
i enjoyed "The First Big Ride" by Eloise Hanner - that was inspiring
Ultra Marathon Man by Dave Karnasas is another cool read
Here's another one: "Ask the Dusk" by John Fante. Dry, twisted & funny. L.A. esque, struggling writer in the 30s.
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.
ooh i just read Kite Runner as well...great read, esp now that Afghanistan is back in the news ;-)
just started Life of Pi...looks like another winner
